Turkish archeologists find 2500-year-old masks made to express Ionian women’s grief after their husbands' death

IZMIR, TURKEY - NOVEMBER 04: Turkish archeologists have unearthed 2500-year-old relief masks representing the griefs of Ionian warriors’ wives in Neonteikhos ancient city, an area in Menemen district of Turkey’s Izmir province.With a history dating back the 6th century BC, the ancient Greek city is situated on the Northern Aegean Highway where is located between Izmir and Canakkale.Around 2,500 years ago, Ionian women made terracotta masks to express their pains after losing their warrior husbands, and they put them in their cemeteries to accompany them after death.Hunkar Keser, the director of Izmir Archeology Museum told Anadolu Agency Video News that masks have an important value around the world.“The ruins of the Ancient City of Neonteikhos were found. We started rescue excavations with the experts in the museum since 2017. It came out that an ancient road passed through the region and was built in 600 BC,”he said.Noting that women's masks are decorated with necklaces and earrings, Keser said that the mood of mourning of the rebellions and wars in the Ionian region is also reflected in sculpture.The relief female masks is now on display in the İzmir Archeology Museum after the restoration works.
