POLAND, MALBORK (RECENT) AUGUST: Turkish fighter jets carried out air patrols this week to guard the skies over Poland as part of NATO’S Baltic (BAP) air policing duties.The air patrols help the alliance keep its skies safe and secure around the clock.Turkish F-16s at Malbork airbase in Poland are working with the Polish air force in securing the skies in the region.On Friday (Aug. 27) Turkish F-16s flew with the Polish C-295M Casa military cargo plane. It was stated that the purpose of the flight is to develop skills and capabilities through NATO cooperation.Colonel Ahmet Candir, the commander of the Turkish unit in Malbork, said they were performing the duty of protecting NATO's borders in Poland.“As Turkey, the country with the airspace in the southern border (of NATO), we have come to the north, stationed here and performing our duties successfully,” said Candir.Captain Omer Kul said they work to perform their duties on a 24/7 basis, sharing their experiences with Polish pilots.Baltic Air Policing (BAP) is a specific, regional form of NATO's enduring Air Policing mission. BAP has been executed continuously since April 2004; so far, 17 NATO nations have participated in this mission.Like Air Policing in the rest of our European Allies' territory, BAP is conducted to protect the integrity of Allies' airspace and to promote air safety for all aircraft.“NATO Air Policing ensures the integrity of Allies' airspace in Europe and protects Alliance nations by maintaining a continuous 24/7 Air Policing within SACEUR's area of responsibility.
