Turkish scientists spot rare Sei whales in Arctic during research mission
SVALBARD AND JAN MAYEN, NORWAY - JULY 23, 2025: Turkish scientists have been examining microplastics, marine life, and ecosystem changes around Norway’s Svalbard archipelago as part of the country’s 5th National Arctic Scientific Research Expedition.Researchers also recorded rare sightings of Sei whales in the Arctic region on Wednesday, July 23, alongside preliminary findings from projects spanning multiple disciplines.The mission, carried out under the auspices of the Turkish Presidency and coordinated by TÜBİTAK’s Polar Research Institute, focused on the effects of sea ice melt on marine ecosystems and the role of microplastics as pollutant carriers.Türkiye is leading its fifth scientific research expedition to the Arctic to seek answers concerning the planet's future through 19 projects to be carried out in the region's marine environment.The scientific research team, led by Türkiye’s Presidency, includes participants from the Scientific and Technological Research Institution (Tubitak), the Directorate of Navigation, Hydrography, and Oceanography (SHOD), the Anadolu news agency, and various Istanbul-, Ankara-, and Izmir-based universities, as well as three guest researchers from Bulgaria, Argentina, and Ecuador.(Footage by Şebnem Coşkun/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
