Uganda closes refugee holding center in Kisoro district

NYAKABANDE, UGANDA - NOVEMBER 2: Uganda have closed a refugee holding center in Kisoro district on Wednesday, Nov. 2, forcing many Congolese refugees to return home while the security situation in the country is still fragile.The refugee holding center is home to around 18,000 refugees, who fled the fierce fighting between Congolese rebels of the March 23 Movement (M23) and government troops in eastern Congo.The refugees will be reportedly transferred to settlement camps in western Uganda.Since the resumption of clashes between Congolese army and the rebels, more than 50,000 people have been displaced in the province of North Kivu, according to the UN Office for Humanitarian Coordination (OCHA).Over 20,000 refugees have flocked to Uganda.Uganda police spokesman Fred Enanga said during a recent media interview in Kampala that ‘‘currently over 20,000 Congolese refugees have entered Uganda. We have stepped up security at the border.”The third Inter-Congolese peace dialogue is scheduled in Kenya's capital Nairobi on Nov. 4-13.The Nairobi process was launched by the East African Community bloc in April, emphasizing dialogue under the chairmanship of former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.However, authorities in Kinshasa excluded M23 fighters from the talks, claiming that it was terrorist group being externally supported to continue the war.
