MAICAO, COLOMBIA - OCTOBER 28: Venezuelan migrants as well as Colombian returnees survive in critical conditions of misery at the old Maicao airport.The Maicao airport, which was once thriving with dozens of weekly flights, including international ones, ended up closing after corruption charges and other problems.Neighborhoods witnessed the demolition of its control tower and hangars back in 2013.Thousands of families from Venezuela and Colombia invaded the streets of Maicao and little by little they took over the track."The idea of invading was born because we don't have a way to pay rent, most of us arrived empty-handed, so from there you didn't have a way to pay rent, because the cheapest rent would be 300 thousand (Colombian Pesos) and we don't have that," said one of the residents Yadira González.Another inhabitant is Jefferson Pereira, who works with a donkey selling water for other residents to afford a life for his own family."In some moments, I work as a shoemaker to be able to get ahead every day. Sometimes the water sells fast, when you have customers they call you, if you have a phone the person calls you and says bring me a bucket of water, or two to three buckets. It pays more to one.
