Aichi town brings to boil ritual put on back burner for 2 years
Video footage shows a “sakaki-oni” masked demon dancing amid the crowd chanting the phrase “tehohe” at a festival said to date back more than 700 years in Toei, Aichi Prefecture, on Dec. 3-4. Those splashed by water brought to a boil in a cauldron are said to be protected from catching cold. The ritual, which prays for a bountiful harvest and scares away evil spirits, was put off for the past two years due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. The video includes footage taken in November and December. (The Asahi Shimbun)
