Karatsu Kunchi special parade held in inaugural year of new imperial era
Video footage taken in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture, shows extravagantly decorated “yama” floats being pulled through the city’s central district during the Karatsu Kunchi special parade held on May 5. Depicting mythical lions, dragons, fish and warriors, the floats bobbed up and down as teams pulled them through a crowd of about 110,000 spectators. Included on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, the festival is normally held in November. But this year, a special parade was staged to mark the 200 years since construction of the main float as well as to celebrate the enthronement of Emperor Naruhito.
