New Stop For Train Line Known For Anpanman Creator’s Artwork Sets Off Search For New Station Mascot
Video footage taken in Prefecture shows the Gomen-Nahari Line operated by the Tosa Kuroshio Tetsudo Railway Co. Ltd., notable because each of the 20 stations along it route boasts its own mascot designed by writer and illustrator Takashi Yanase (1919-2013), best known as the creator of the popular children’s character Anpanman. Yanase was approached by a local businessman to design a character for the line’s opening and response offered to design one for each of the stations on the rural line that operates on the eastern part of the prefecture. Although work on the line officially began in 1965, financial difficulties held up its operation until 2002. A new station is set to open on the line in 2021, fueling ideas for a new mascot to be chosen.
