Living national treasure of theater is still active at age 93

Video footage taken May 2 in Tokyo’s Bunkyo Ward shows kyogen performer Nomura Mansaku, a designated living national treasure who at age 93 continues to maintain an active schedule touring around the country. Born into the art and taught the traditional form of Japanese theater by his father, Nomura has been on stages for 90 years, pushing through decades when the art little modern public appeal. Thanks to audiences rediscovering kyogen however, he now serves is leader and inspiration to 15 professional performers.
