Stinking Swedish fish dish draws large crowd at can opening

Video footage taken on Aug. 21 in Tokyo's Nakano Ward shows a crowd of 1,500 people gathered to try their olfactory sense and taste buds on Sweden's famed fermented fish dish surstromming--said to be one of the malodorous foods in the world. Organized by a local neighborhood association, the event served up the fish from imported cans on crackers and mashed potatoes as an attempt to deepen understanding of foreign culinary cultures. The video footage was taken by Takahiro Takizawa of The Asahi Shimbun.
