Celebrity octopus off Shizuoka cape shakes tentacles with divers
Video footage taken on March 4 shows a “mejirodako” octopus marginatus, also known as coconut octopus, interacting with a diver 15 meters underwater off Cape Koganezaki in Nishi-Izu, Shizuoka Prefecture. Hiroko Matsumoto, who first spotted the creature in February, named the female octopus Horami-chan partly because it inhabits a conch shell that resembles a “horagai” Triton’s trumpet. The octopus seems to remember individual divers it has met and responds accordingly. (Kazuhiko Okada)
