Activity pricks up in Iwate Prefecture as time to gather sea urchin arrives
Video footage taken on May 30 in Hirono, Iwate Prefecture, shows the start in earnest of this year’s “uni” sea urchin gathering season, with 28 local divers—only two of them men—wading into the shallows to gather the spiky delicacies. The shallow work done mainly by women continues until about the end of June, after which men take up the task from July to the end of August, diving for the urchins further off shore. Hirono is Japan’s most productive area for sea urchin. (Kazumasa Sugimura)
