Ho Chi Minh
Vietnam - Circa 1966: In November 1946, French shelling of the port of Hyong marked the start of the Indochina War, triggering eight years of guerrilla conflict led by Ho Chi Minh. Ho retreated to the jungle with his Vietminh forces, initially armed with outdated French, Japanese, and World War II-era American weapons, before receiving Communist support. Deep in the jungle, Ho and key figures like Trong Chin, Fam Bandong, and guerrilla expert Bonwap developed strategies to expel the French. Although Ho had no direct contact with other Communist states until 1950, his rhetoric remained rooted in nationalism, focused on liberating Vietnam from foreign domination.(Footage by Roberto Machado Noa/Getty Images)
