BAC NINH, VIETNAM - OCTOBER 10: Vietnam is confronting a flood disaster of an unprecedented scale in recent years after being hit by a series of destructive storms, with the latest Typhoon Matmo causing renewed flooding and destruction in the country's northern regions.Torrential rains from Typhoon Matmo have unleashed the worst floods in northern Vietnam in nearly 40 years, killing at least eight people and leaving five missing, according to officials.The storms have left a trail of devastation, resulting in significant loss of life and property. Authorities reported that thousands of homes, roads, and agricultural areas across the nation have been damaged, with many people losing their lives and their livelihoods.According to a report on October 8 from Acting Minister of Agriculture and Environment Tran Duc Thang, Vietnam endured five storms from September to early October. Among them, storms No. 9 (Ragasa), No. 10 (Bualoi), and No. 11 (Matmo) inflicted severe damage across the northern and central regions.Preliminary statistics as of October 8 indicate that storms No. 10 and 11 alone led to more than 80 people dead or missing. The storms caused 195,600 houses to collapse, lose their roofs, or be severely damaged, and inundated or destroyed 87,000 hectares of rice and other crops.The disaster also devastated numerous roads, schools, healthcare centers, and public infrastructure. The total estimated economic loss is projected to be tens of trillions of Vietnamese dong, equivalent to several billion US dollars.Following Typhoon Matmo, the northern province of Bac Ninh was reported as one of the areas heavily impacted.
