House Judiciary Chairman Goodlatte opens hearing with Jeff sessions

Virginia Congressman Bob Goodlatte tells Attorney General Jeff Sessions that his first year at the Department of Justice was not without difficulty, calling the Committee's last oversight hearing with Loretta Lynch disappointing, that before her Eric Holder became the first Attorney General, to be held in contempt by the House of Representatives for the stonewalling in relation to Operation Fast and Furious. Goodlatte says he suspects the theme of Russia will be a constant refrain from Democrats, understanding his effort to recuse himself from the investigation was an effort to do the right thing as a person of integrity and impartiality. Goodlatte says he would leave special counsel Robert Mueller free to do his job. But the committee would conduct oversight, such as in a letter calling on Sessions to appoint a second special counsel over numerous matters related to the 2016 presidential election that remained unresolved. Goodlatte says partisanship at the Department and the FBI hurt perceptions of their investigation, but the Department must remain immune from accusations of politicization by evenhandedly administering justice.
