William Hague and Kevin Rudd joint AUKMIN press conference; Kevin Rudd (Australian Foreign Minister) SOT re: excellent hosts for 4th meeting of AUKMIN- transformation in relationship, once narrow and limited- now its broad partly reflective of age of globalisation- Australia sees itself as regional power- Britain is a major power with global interests and afairs of Euyrope- what underpins success is common values and opinions- reflected in scope of discussions had in last 48 hours- our collaboration with UN, USA - our common concerns on challenge of cyber security- new areas of co-operation across needs of developing countries - common development programmes in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Africa- recent developments in Middle East- observed Syria seriously- concerned about Iran- wait for outcomes of Arab Spring- focussed on a number of particular areas- we should be confident of Europe's economic future- believe Europe has robust future- recent British diplomacy on Iran, important decisions taken in Brussels- re EU sanctions against Iran, oil and other measures, Australian govt formally supports range of sanctions- right course of action- iranian weapons programme is destabilising- commend British diplomacy in relation to Burma- recent visit of Hague is fundamentally important- bring Burma in from the cold- important we work together - much work remains to be done- issue of Somalia- conference planned for next month- we will be supporting this initiative- fundamental problems need to be addressed- political problems which underpin security challenges in Horn of Africa need to be addressed- common endeavour of piracy- Australian engagement with Britain and Europe has changed in last years- deepening relationship with UK, France- I travel here from here in London to Germany- engaged in formalisation of a treaty relationship with EU- Australia sees value in wider relationship with Europe and UK
