William J Fishman on the Battle of Cable Street and 'They Shall Not Pass' banners, UK; 1970

William J. Fishman (Bill Fishman), a historian and academic, stands outside Whitechapel Art Gallery in Whitechapel High Street, and recalls memories of the Battle of Cable Street that took place in 1936, Fishman says, "It was a very fine day, the whole of this main thoroughfare was crowded with people...and one banner stands out in my mind, I think it represented the, the driving force of the people of East London, who came out to stop the fascists on that day, 'They Shall Not Pass' and I remember, although I didn't really understand why I was here, that this is why I had come out, with my fellow Jews, that the fascists would not pass in East London."
