Williams Chief Designer Adrian Newey is interviewed on what goes together to make a title winning F1 car, the relation to road going vehicles and why the UK is such a hub for motor racing.
Formula One: Williams Team cars; Part 1 of 2ENGLAND: Oxford: Didcot:INTAdrian Newey (Chief Designer Williams) interview SOT- No one thing that gives car the edge; it's a complicated make-up of different performance parameters; aerodynamics, suspension, geometry of the suspension, dynamics, centre of gravity position, the engine itself, the fuel, they all come together to make the car itself / once you have the car you have to refine it; the wing settings for a given circuit, the ride heights, the spring settings, damping settings / that's derived over pre-season testing, testing during the season / once you get to the race itself, it's the job of the race engineers and drivers to cooperate and collaborate together to come up with a setup that best suits the circuit / it's a complicated overall project- The cars are far closer to air and spacecraft than road cars; the composite chassis is carbon fibre and kevlar, there's a lot of titanium on the cars / the research for the cars is very detailed in terms of wind tunnel testing / all the stress analysis of the car is done in-house; it's a lot of work / the cars have no real cost constraint; beyond budget and the drivers huge salary / there's far less worry about the cost of individual components; we only build four of five cars a year; the main cost is the research rather than the materials- It does seem that the Oxfordshire area is a very popular area for motor racing companies / you have Williams in Didcot, Benetton just north of Oxford, Jordan at Silverstone and so on / why there are so many British motor racing teams is a difficult question; often people say it's a cottage industry, and it's certainly true the supplier base is in Britain so it sort of snowballs, but it also seems that the British are very good at producing limited manufacture innovative ideas / we tend to fall down when you get into mass production, but in these sort of things when you are making very few, it seems to work well.
