GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - SEP. 4, 2024: A 13-year-old Palestinian boy, Vesim Muhammad, who lost his father in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza, was mistakenly believed to have died after being targeted while being transferred to Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital. During his funeral prayer, relatives discovered he was still alive when he began moving inside his burial shroud. Vesim was rushed back to the hospital for surgery, but Israeli forces raided the facility, and he was shot in the chest. The boy, who had lost a leg in the earlier attack, recounted that he heard people around him but was unable to respond until he managed to uncover his face during the funeral prayer. , Speaking from a tent where he now lives with his family, Vesim recalled the day his life changed forever. “I was playing with my bicycle in the schoolyard when they bombed the school,� he said, referring to the attack on Abu Hussein School in Jabalia. “My father was martyred, and I lost my leg.� After the initial strike, Vesim and others were moved to a shelter, but they were targeted again. “They took us to the shelter, and I found my right side injured. They bombed the shelter again.� In the chaos that followed, Vesim’s leg was amputated without anesthesia. Later, while recovering in a hospital, he was mistakenly believed to be dead and prepared for burial. “They wrapped me in a shroud and placed me near the dead bodies. They prayed over me, and at that moment, I was still alive. I started to move when I heard the prayers.� Despite surviving this ordeal, Vesim was shot again when Israeli forces raided the hospital. “A bullet hit my heart. The Jews came, and I asked them for water. They gave me water and poured it over me,� he recalled.
